Our Team
Leadership
Sonia Acosta, PhD (she/her/ella) is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Centro Multicultural La Familia (CMLF), and is the heart behind the creation of the organization back in 2007. Dr. Acosta is a fully licensed bilingual/bicultural psychologist with 32 years of experience in the field of mental health, substance abuse, parenting education and domestic violence. She is passionate about bringing culturally competent services to the urban community and bridging the gap between communities of color working towards healing and empowerment. Dr. Acosta loves cultural music, international foods and enjoys bird watching in her freetime.

Jesmarie is originally from Aguada, Puerto Rico and moved to Michigan in 2021 with her husband. Jesmarie holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Human Resources Management and a minor in Project Management from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Accounting from Western Governors University. Jesmarie currently works as the Finance and Operations Coordinator at Centro, assisting with the Finance, Accounting, and Human Resources aspects of the Organization. In her free time, Jesmarie enjoys traveling, discovering new places, and enjoying nature and seeing its wonders.

Mrs. Nancy Truly provides mental health services to individuals and families going through certain life challenges. Mrs.Truly holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Colorado Denver, and a Master's Degree in Counseling from Oakland University. She assists in the supervision of clinical students during their internships at Centro. Mrs. Truly also assists with the Performance Quality Improvement process among other clinical duties. She is one of the core staff at Centro Multicultural La Familia and has been with the organization since 2015.

Elizabeth joined Centro Multicultural La Familia in August 2023. As a Program Director for the Culturally Specific Responsive Services for Underserved Victims of Crime (CSRUV) program she oversees the day to day activities of a diverse team of Community/Client Advocates and Volunteer Coordination while leading quality assurance initiatives and systems improvement processes. Elizabeth obtained her Masters in Public Health from Indiana University Bloomington. Prior to moving to Michigan, she led public health and community engagement initiatives in Puerto Rico, New York City, the Dominican Republic.Her areas of interest are health disparities and equity, community engagement and history. Elizabeth speaks Spanish,English and Arabic.

Debra Rivera Ehrmann (she/her/hers) has been a critical advocate for 30+ years throughout Wayne and Oakland County, Michigan. Debra studied criminal justice at Wayne State University. This experience and training has guided her mission for empowering marginalized communities and has amplified her strong sense of seeking justice for the underserved. Medical interpreter, confectionery baker, mechanic, disaster relief worker, and outdoor survivalist, Debra’s drive has led her to pursue multiple passions throughout her lifetime, jumping at the opportunity to take Latinx youth under her guidance and mentorship. In her free time, Debra loves camping, traveling, baking and mechanics.

Deyanira MarchandWorkshop Facilitator
Brenda Ortega is currently working with Centro through the Ventanilla de Salud program in partnership with the Mexican Consulate. She holds a degree in Human Movement and a Master's in Sports Science with a Biology focus from Chihuahua, Mexico. Brenda completed her Doctorate in Science of Physical Culture at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, with co-direction from the University of Malaga, Spain, in 2018. As a Level II member of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK), her expertise lies in research on physical activity for health, energy metabolism, and overall well-being. Brenda is passionate about educating and preventing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in the community by promoting healthy lifestyles.

Evangelina (Eva) earned her PhD in Chicano/Latino Studies and Social Work from Michigan
State University, East Lansing, Michigan. She also holds a master’s in clinical social work and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology both from MSU, and a Bachelor of Educational Psychology from the University of Guanajuato, Mexico. Dr. Palma Ramirez is one of the bilingual mental health clinicians who provides counseling, mentorship, and educational opportunities for Spanish-speakers audiences struggling with conflict, abuse, and trauma, yet she is equally competent to provide services to anybody who requests services.
Dr. Palma Ramírez has many years of experience working in and for the Latinx community. She has helped many families and individuals to gain access to community services and resources promoting their empowerment and leadership. Witnessing people’s process of healing and growth gives her motivation and encouragement to continue her work. She also enjoys gardening, exercising, meditating, and spending time with friends and her dog, Bruno.
Evangelina Palma Ramírez, PhD, LCSWMental Health Clinician
Stephanie Sustaita is a bilingual (English and Spanish) Mental Health Clinician at Centro Multicultural La Familia. She completed her internship at Centro in August 2022. Stephanie graduated from University of Michigan-Flint with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology in 2018 and in 2022 from Oakland University with a Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Stephanie works mostly with youth, young adults and their families going through difficult times. Stephanie has experience working with those dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma and difficult transitional periods. Stephanie is passionate about connecting the latino community with resources, advocating for mental health, connecting with nature and learning about different cultures. During her free time Stephanie enjoys gardening, painting, and spending time with family and friends.
