To provide culturally-competent support services to families in a holistic approach in order to improve their quality of life.
We are a private, not-for-profit, mission-driven organization that provides comprehensive services to a diverse community. While most of the clients we serve now are of Latin descent, we strive to offer services to a broader cultural community.
We are proud to be able to offer culturally and linguistically competent services in the areas of mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, victims of crime advocacy, parenting education, health education and promotion, wellness workshops, Exito Educativo and support and interpretation for pregnant women at St Joseph’s Women Center.
Our History
Centro Multicultural La Familia formerly known as El Centro “La Familia” was founded in 1985 by Oakland County Community Mental Health (OCCMH) to provide the Hispanic community with quality mental health care in a culturally sensitive way. The County provided mental health services but did not have bilingual staff among their health providers. At that time, a group of community leaders were instrumental in the awareness of the need and initiation of mental health services for the Spanish-speaking population of Oakland County. In 1992, Sonia Acosta, PhD, became El Centro’s first full time supervisor. She was hired to supervise the program and also to provide direct mental health services. Then, El Centro had one full time clerical staff and 2 mental health clinicians. With her grant writing skills, Dr Acosta was able to grow the program to 35 bilingual bicultural staff members.
In 2000, OCCMH became an authority and stopped providing direct services and Centro became part of Easter Seals. Seeing the growing need to provide services other than mental health to the Hispanic community, El Centro separated from its parent organization and formed Centro Multicultural La Familia, Inc. (CMLF) offering a broader array of services for the Spanish-speaking community. CMLF is a key player in the Latino community, advocating for services that address the unique needs of the community with Limited English Proficiency.
